I was in a similar position to you a while back. I tried to start with PHP4 beta 1 but soon backed
down to PHP3 (I was more than capable of making errors myself without the constant question over
whether it was PHP4 crapping out.) These days I use a recent PHP4 cvs checkout without any obvious
problems.
It might be worth mentioning exactly which bits of PHP you intend to use if you want people to
advise you on stability. For instance I'm using it as an Apache module with a MySql database on
Linux, but there may be problems in other bits I've never touched.
Also my use of PHP is entirely non-critical, I'm just goofing around, learning PHP when I have
a spare moment (which isn't that often sadly).
Cheers,
Paul
