I've just tried the beta version of Compaq's C compiler for
Linux/Alpha.
$ ccc -V
Compaq C T6.2-001 on Linux 2.2.13pre6 alpha
Compiler Driver T6.2-001 (Linux) cc Driver
The compiler generates a number of warning messages (most are
related to unsigned vs. signed, const vs. non-const). An
interesting one is displayed for zend_execute_API.c:
line 105: this statement, an array subscript expression is
either less than zero or greater than the largest value that
can be represented by the size_t type. (badsubscript)
EG(symtable_cache_ptr) = EG(symtable_cache)-1;
----------------------------------------------------^
Setting up the beast was worse than compiling PHP4 - the
binaries are linked against glibc-2.0.7 which needed to be
compiled as well as some auxiliar things (ncurses, binutils).
alloca seems to be completely missing from my libraries, but
PHP's bundled alloca.c seems to do the job.
