Problem with --enable-trans-sid and national characters when cookies turned off

Hi, I compiled PHP/4.0B3-dev (latest CVS) with --enable-trans-sid and turned off session cookies in my browser. When I try to use session_start(); (or session.auto_start = 1) in a document that contains swedish/national charaters, all the output is garbled. When I change, for example "ä" to "ä", everything works just fine. Has anyone else had problems with this?
