If it crashes on every time it means your build is broken. Unfortunately the build process of PHP 4.0 is extremely unreliable when it comes to updating CVS versions. Make sure you update both your php4 and libzend trees, run ./buildconf and most important, make clean. If that still doesn't help, try a fresh checkout.
