OCI8 and PHP4

First of all, my apologies if this topic has been covered earlier. Please direct me to the appropriate FAQ is that is the case. Yesterday, I compiled PHP4 with Oracle8 and Apache 1.3.9. When I try to run some of the example scripts that are available in the annotated manual, my results contain only those cells that have number values in them. Varchars and chars are not retrieved. A simple Select on the SQL> prompt does retrieve them.
