php4 and versioning

i got installed php3.13dev and php4cvs of 29/09/1999...-
now... php4cvs works fine ... i tryed to build the new cvs every day from
29/09 but it always crashes on my sites...
The problem is that every time i install the new version, i see that it does
not work and i had to put back the old version.
Is there a way (with versioning) to have php3 (.php3) + php4cvs0929(.php) +
php4cvs[today] (.php4) associated with the 3 different extensions?
or versioning can help me only with whole different version of php?
