I was thinking about this as well, as I need GD for my website,
but the problem doesn't seem to be straight forward to me.
GD only supports GIFs up to version 1.5. All newer versions
only support PNG. So someone who needs GIFs would be using
an old version of it, while someone who is satisfied with PNG
would be using the newer version.
IMHO, PHP will have to support both the old and new libraries.
Personally, I needed GIF yet also wanted the new features of
GD 1.7, so I've simply hacked the GIF support back into the
latest version of GD.
