Adding a function to PHP4

Could someone tell me how I could add a function to PHP4, I assume
I would create a source file for it in ext/standard but I don't
understand how I can manipulate PHP datastructures so that when called
by the PHP script my function would return a PHP array that could be
used, if someone could shed some light on this subject I would really
appreciate it.
