asp_tags PHP4 beta 2

Good evening, I'm using the module version of PHP4 beta 2... I've tried both .htaccess files and my Apache configuration files (srm.conf/httpd.conf) to set the php_admin_flag asp_tags On Other flags and values work fine, however, not asp tags! This is a feature I enjoy because clients can use a tool like FrontPage easily without (usually) damaging underlying PHP scripts... <? phpinfo(); ?> reports asp_tags as being "On" locally; I'm running in a virtual server environment (sorry), so therefore, I don't have access to the global php.ini file (which has asp_tags set to "off" according to phpinfo();) and I can't really recompile Apache/PHP4 either.
