Off topic, but what the hell...
To do it in Java one would be required to use Swing. AWT is unusable for
a complicated program such as this. Swing, however, is bloated and
poorly written. I got all excited one day and made myself a little swing
text editor. WooHoo, it worked! And it was pretty! Then I started
looking into adding cut and paste, undos, etc. My God those classes are
horrible! Here I am leafing through a 1500 page book that ONLY talks
about swing components, and the undo manager and document model make no
sense whatsoever. The document model is powerful, but horribly written.
In contrast I made a text editor under OpenStep, which contained 7 lines
of code and had full undo, cut and paste, and search and replace
capabilities. Ugh, why didn't Sun rip off OpenStep a little more?
Summary: I don't think swing is up to snuff yet, and I'd stick to native
windowing systems or a cross platform gui library (FLTK comes to mind,
and it might even be advanced enough for something like this... http://fltk.easysw.com/)

Physicists think the real world models equations.
Engineers think equations model the real world.
Mathematicians fail to make the connection.
