Okay, now to have some real fun :) The java stuff is creating 3
additional processes each time I hit the script, up to a certain point.
To explain, here is some ps output:
(initial server start)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ./apachectl start
./apachectl start: httpd started
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
6
(after hitting html page)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
7
(another html page)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
7
(after hitting a php script)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
7
(another php script)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
7
(after hitting jver.php)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
10
(hitting jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
13
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
16
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
19
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
22
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
22
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
22
(jver.php again)
[root@dhcp26130134 bin]# ps -ef | grep -c /home/web/apache/bin/httpd
25
I noticed this timing the script. I noticed that at first the scripts
took ~ .3 seconds to run, and after a bit only about .01. I attributed
this to the overhead of staring up a jvm in each of the apache
processes. But then I realized that the times it was .3 seconds were
more than it should have taken to poulate my 6 httpd processes... It
seems to stall out at 25 processes at least...
