For something like a template system I can see a filter mechanism in PHP
being a good idea because you need to feed stuff from PHP into
it. However, I don't agree that a compression layer fits. You would want
to be able to send non-PHP static files through this compression filter as
well and as such it should be done at the Apache layer or in front of the
server with a reverse proxy. The IOL mechanism in Apache2 is the perfect
place for it.
