I had the same problem with libc-client when compiling with imap and pdf. You have one library missing durink final linking step, check which one: # grep -l TT_Init_FreeType /usr/lib/lib* /usr/lib/libttf.a /usr/lib/libttf.so /usr/lib/libttf.so.2 /usr/lib/libttf.so.2.1.0 So I think you need to add something like EXTRA_LIBS="$EXTRA_LIBS -lttf" somewhere near the bottom of php4/ext/gd/config.m4, and rerun buildconfig. I don't know if this is the correct solution, but it works for me.
