SUSE 6.1 and PHP4-beta3

Hello!
I'm having serious problems getting anywhere with the installation
of PHP4 (beta3) on SUSE Linux 6.1. I'm attempting to build it with
Apache 1.3.9, mSQL, MySQL, internal filepro, and internal dBase
functionality.

One common error is:
checking whether to include GD support... configure: error: Unable to
find libgd.(a|so) anywhere under /usr/lib
Yet if I check for libgd.a in /usr/lib, it's there.. ??
Previously, and this depends a little on which options I specify to
./configure, when I ran make it claimed it could not open gd.h
Other errors include "incompatible declarations..", etc.
Is there something I'm doing wrong (fundamentally), or is this a
problem with the SUSE 6.1 distribution.. or <gasp!> a problem with
the PHP4-beta3 distribution?
