Basedir.. dir().. etc. - PHP4.b3

Hola.. .. httpd.conf contains: php_admin_flag safe_mode on php_admin_value safe_mode_exec_dir "/path/to/httpd/cgi/" php_admin_value doc_root "/root/of/html/sites/" php_admin_flag engine on php_admin_value open_basedir "/root/of/html/sites/" In a script (.php) that is running in "/root/of/html/sites/phptest/joho/" I do a <?php $d = dir ("/root/of/html/sites"); .. read directory and output contents .. ?> This works. If I, however, attempt to access "/root/of/html/sites/phptest/joho", for example - I get an "access denied.." error.. [OpenDir: Permission denied errno 13]? I thought that the open_basedir WAS a base dir.. ? If it is, shouldn't I be able to access stuff beneath it?
