configure script is looking for ext/imap/Makefile

I have run the configure script to add imap support, ./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.9 --with-imap --enable-track-vars the configure script tells me that it cant find imap library. The configure script is looking for ext/Makefile, which simply doesn't exist....then i notice the only makefile that exists for those functions in basically apache (ext/apache). There is no Makefile for ext/ldap etc. I am very familiar with php3 install and the language itself.
