I've been using PHP4 session as a basis for an authentication routine I'm working on for our intranet. Although we don't have huge amounts of traffic, I can tell you that I've been very happy with the file based session storage. Very speedy and clean. One thing I should mention, however, is that I'm using a FreeBSD RAM disk to store the session data... which probably benefits overall access time. So far though, I've been very happy with what I've seen of PHP4 Sessions, and when it is finally stable enough for a release version, I definitely plan on using it for a few projects I have planned over the next year. could give me some sort of idea about the extra load this would place on a machine. I plan to use sessions as part of my authentication system. It depends on what session storage method you use. Currently session module supports file-based storage, shared memory based storage, and also a way for you to register your custom callbacks and provide the storage yourself. As far as file-base storage method (the default) is concerned, it should be fairly fast. There is not quantifiable way to say how fast it is but if you want to run some tests and post the results, I think it would be interesting.
