PHP4&Apache compilation on Mdk6.1?

I tried compiling PHP4b3 and Apache1.3.9 using their respective source packages from their respective distribution sites, but after doing a final "make install" for Apache I was left with a second installation of Apache, which puzzled me. After working out why, I went and got the Mandrake Apache sources, installed the RPM, and now have a bunch of BZip archives sitting on my system and I dunno what to do with them. Could someone who's successfully compiled both PHP and Apache on their Mandrake systems please email me privately on how to do so? Thanks in advance.
