Compiling various libraries under Windows

I was wondering what success people have had, and what steps they had to take to compile libraries such as GD, or PDFlib under Windows.
I looked at the VC++ project for mysql and modelled it as best I could to try and compile gd without success. Is there any documentation on this, maybe I'm missing something really simple.
I'd like to use the new support for DB2 (without the ODBC overhead), and probably GD and PDFlib as well.
