Can't use WDDX as session.serialize_handler

Although the manual says I can, I don't seem to be able to make WDDX
(--with-wddx --with-xml) as my session.serialize_handler. After I edit
php.ini, my php pages with session statements go empty. My biggest
interst in this is being able to register objects, is there any other
way to do this using pure php?
