mysql_connect and pconnect in safe mode

When in safe mode, mysql_connect and pconnect always rejects
connections, even if I'm positive about the user and password and having
reloaded mysql and tested in the console with mysql mysq -u xxxx -p (for
example).
Could I be doing anything wrong?
