In the end it was nothing to do with that line, the web designer simply hadn't closed a <script> section properly (left out the // from the // --> if I recall correctly). I couldn't see any evidence of that on the page I was getting from www.php.net, nor anything obvious in the php source, but it would be easier to identify the problem from the exact HTML you are being sent.
