Rasmus, can you please tell if one has to have libpng.a
available to build PHP with GD-support, even if one only
wants to use gifs? GD-version is 1.5, and PHP is CVS-2000-01-03
config.log shows that gif-support isn't included since ld tries
to use -lpng when looking for gdImageCreateFromGif.
Best regards,
/Johan Ekenberg
From config.log (configure --with-gd):
configure:9285: checking for gdImageCreateFromGif in -lgd
configure:9304: gcc -o conftest -ggdb3 -I../openssl-0.9.4/include
conftest.c -lgd -lgd -lm -lpng -lz 1>&5
/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lpng: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 9293 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
char gdImageCreateFromGif();
int main() {
gdImageCreateFromGif()
; return 0; }

Depends on the gd version. Rasmus worked on the gd checks
short time ago, he can probably answer your questions.
