php4beta and apache modules

I have installed php4b3 and apache_1.3.9 on three of my machines now, and I have
a problem that I cannot solve. I can't make a version of apache that includes
modules and also php4.
If I do 'apache_1.3.9> configure ... --activate-module=php4...
--with-modules=max' it will fail to build php4. without the --with-modules=max
it builds fine, but then I cannot use the 'extendedserverstatus=on' directive
[Which is what I want right now] .
If I go by the 'php4b3/INSTALL quick install section' exactly it works fine,
but no extendedstatus=on.
