date not correct

Hi, I'm using CVS version and I have this piece of script:
$query2 = "select count(*) from sito where ";
$query2 .= " data_inserimento between ";
$query2 .= "'";
$query2 .= date("d-m-Y",mktime(0,0,0,
date("m"),date("d")-5,date("y")));
$query2 .="' AND";
$query2 .=
"'".date("d-m-Y",mktime(0,0,0,date("m"),date("d"),date("y")))."'";
I want to know why it return me that $query2 is:
select count(*)
from sito where
data_inserimento
between '01-01-1970'
AND'01-01-1970'
On my system date is correct and hwclock idem.
