Can't access $PATH_TRANSLATED variable under PWS4/PHP4b3/NT4SP5

The following script:

echo("-->".$PATH_TRANSLATED."<--");
echo("-->".$PHP_SELF."<--");
phpinfo();
?>
, produces the output:
--><---->/index.php<--
followed by php_info().
But both $PATH_TRANSLATED and $PHP_SELF are set (found in php_info()):
$PATH_TRANSLATED=C:\InetPub\wwwroot\index.php
$PHP_SELF=/index.php
I have track_vars=On.
Any hints?
