(repost) session_set_save_handler doesn't work?

I've tried both the latest CVS and beta 3 and I cannot get the
session_set_save_handler function to work. I'm using code taken directly
from the website (http://www.php.net/manual/ref.session.php3). The output
I get is:
open (/tmp, sid)
read (d1a7528a5f19afec824c409f63559dd3)
And that's all. write and close are never called.
I added debugging information inside php4/ext/session/mod_user.c and those
two functions are definitely the only ones that get called. What is going
on here? Something similar happened to another person (D
<drago@0x00.org>) in early decemeber.
