PHP4 and JServ session_start problem (more info)

After installing mod_jserv seems to have broken session_start() in PHP4. Basically PHP is writing the session file, however it is empty. After recreating a session file it appears that it is correctly setting the cookie in the browser and reading the session file correctly.
Ideas (please)?
