Wrestling with session.auto_start

Hi all, I'm having problems getting session.auto_start to work. Well, it works, but it hands out a new session ID on every request (from the same browser instance). Isn't this feature supposed to check whether a session ID has allready been assigned to a client? Can anybody light me up on this? Thanks a bunch!
