What are the pros and cons of doing your own session management as opposed to using the builtin session management in php4. The people at SourceForge have done their own session handling for example. Ofcourse I understand that it's easier to use an existing framework instead of making all the functionality yourself. The problem is I am doing some work for a large corporation which do not fancy running a beta on their server. So should I use the beta (php4) or do my own session management in php3?
I've written my own session handling in PHP3 for a few sites I'm working on. Doing so is simple and straightforward, especially if you use MySQL. (The session-handling code in Atkinson's book can help get you thinking along these lines. But it is not comprehensive, so you'll still need to think things out for yourself.) I have not used PHP4's session management yet, so cannot offer a comparison. Mark Lindsay
