I got the same problem on a mips based CobaltRAQ2 using gcc 2.7.2 /tmp/cca11804.s: Assembler messages: /tmp/cca11804.s:910: Error: Branch out of range ... and so on ... This is a problem caused by the gcc code optimization. Disable this (remove the -O2 option) and it works.
