Joey,
Many thanks for the helpful response -- and apologies for a delayed
reply, I wanted to wait until I had useful new information to share.
Recall that my original posting dealt with a series of issues related
to trying to build a ":kitchen sink" version of PHP 4 under Solaris 2.6
on a SPARC platform using gcc 2.95.2.

The depot scheme is *not* a packaging system, it is a set of conventions
for where and how you install all locally installed software in such a
way as to be able to maintain multiple versions, for multiple hardware
and OS types, and (optionally) share such files over a network, without
going crazy or wasting time. I don't know how I ever survived without
it. See http://www.arlut.utexas.edu/csd/opt_depot/opt_depot.html
for
information about the original ARL version -- our much-improved docs.
and scripts should be out later this year...
Thanks for pointing out the Linux Standards Base, which seems an
important initiative (but also unrelated to either packaging or depot).

Summary: the latest aspell does not have a C interface any more and
can't be built for use with PHP. Unfortunately, I can't get the older
aspell *with* PHP-capable interface, version .26.2, to build yet, after
several go-rounds with the author. He is working on a new C API,
though it will be changed from the old one. More on this in a future
posting I hope.

Thanks! The http://www.php.net/manual/ref.XXXXXX.php3 links
are a
*treasure trove* of helpful information for the installer -- but where
is it mentioned in the PHP installation files that one can resort
to these URLs (I had not known about them, and being that they are
labelled with "php3" would not have been confident that they applied
in any case. The INSTALL file should mention these URLs explicitly.

It now appears (from reading the stuff in .../ref.XXXXXX.php3,
that the expat library is *included* with recent versions of Apache,
so this flag may not be required at all...

Not exactly -- but for that, please read my following posting, which
brings things up to date...

Love the sig -- ever collect any money? Got any automated aids to
enforcing the announcement? 8^)
