Uhm, my bad. It seems I had some sort of ./configure wierdness.
Re-running ./configure fixed it and it properly detected standard DES
crypt (which it had somehow goofed the first time...)
Anyway, sorry for bugging everyone with my oversight (always wath the
configure output)
