- The PHP language is described in the PHP manual. It is used to write programs, which we usually call 'scripts'. They look something like this: <?php
     echo "Hello world\n";
?> They are usually saved in files with names ending in .php - The PHP interpreter is a program that is used to run php scripts; it makes the PHP scripts actually work; it 'interprets' the PHP language. The PHP interpreter is usually just called php on Unix/Linux, or php.exe on Windows. Or it can be 'installed inside' a lot of different web servers in different ways, often via .so or .dll files. If you run the PHP interpreter directly, you do it from the commandline something like this: $ php helloworld.php The PHP interpreter itself is written in C. So the line above will run the (compiled) C program called php, and what that program will do is run the PHP script called helloworld.php I hope that makes sense. Ben.
