Hi Chris & all
Since I'm very busy these days I'd really appreciate if people on this
list could give Chris some feedback on this.
Since only plain/text attachments get through the mailinglist I've
uploaded the mockup to http://home.oslo.nith.no/~maghan/php_42308.jpg
Personally I think it looks simple and clean, but am very skeptical
about the top "ajax panel", if we have any use for such thing then the
size of it is at least 10x to big. Furthermore I have a hard time
imagining how the typical manual page would look like..

Hi Hannes,
In response to your feedback from a few weeks ago- I've designed a "hybrid"
of your suggested sites "postgres", etc- and some of the elements we
previously designed that you said your people really liked. Naturally,
there is still much to be designed here- but we wanted to get your opinions
on the "foundation" before moving forward.
A few design notes;
You'll see that we've used a clean, white space on this mock-up, and
incorporated the official logo.
Understanding that you don't like large amounts of the original logo color-
we've only used it as "accent" color in the release articles title text.
We moved away from the pseudo-3D look in favor of a simple and functional
2D-look, which much better fits the "personality" of php.net.
We kept the "tabs" at the top of the site because you mentioned your team
really liking them. We can certainly still modify the tab
title's/functions- but we think this menu system is very sleek, while still
being ultimately usable.
We did not put much detail into the panels on the right side- because we
want your thoughts on the overall design before diving into details.
We've included very few graphic elements because we took into consideration
bandwidth, etc- and we wanted to be lighter on graphics than our previous
concepts.
Lastly, the "AJAX promo panel" is something we feel to be necessary to the
new site. It's a place where we can rotate important announcements/release
downloads/upcoming events/etc. I know that PHP is not a marketing
organization or anything- but most other development-oriented websites have
begun to include this type of homepage feature for it's benefits. Just a
thought- but let me know.
OK- I think I've given you enough to think about- hopefully we're headed on
the right track. I look forward to your thoughts.
-Chris
