This commit applies @marcioAlmada's pull request (https://github.com/php/web-php/pull/53),
additionally cleaning it up, as requested by @bjori in https://github.com/php/web-php/pull/53#discussion-diff-24725253.
I believe this would also help take care of https://github.com/phpbrew/phpbrew/issues/376
