PHP version confusion

http://php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-real-escape-string.php
states:
"This extension was deprecated in PHP 5.5.0, and it was removed in PHP
7.0.0."
But http://php.net/downloads.php show the current stable
version is 5.6.13!
How can something be depreciated and removed by a version that apparently
doesn't exist!
