Topic: Arrays and Objects
Speaker: Ben Birney, Tilson Technology Management
One of PHP’s greatest strengths is in its fast, easy handling of
arrays. Because PHP arrays are so easy and well supported, many
developers choose to use them in favor of more traditional
object-oriented techniques. But is this really best choice? Objects
provide functionality that even multi-dimensional associative arrays do
not, and are often favored by developers engaged in larger projects
intended for long term use and maintenance. Ben Birney will present the
pros and cons of each method for different programming problems, along
with parallel solutions using each. We will also begin with an overview
of array and object functionality in PHP, to ensure that everyone
considers the topic with the same basic understanding of the tools. As
always, discussion and argument are welcome.
About the Speaker: Ben Birney is a web developer for Tilson Technology
Management. Ben graduated from Williams College with a BS in CS, and
went on to become a freelance web developer focusing on small-business
content management systems. He has developed a complete suite of
open-source CMS and e-commerce tools that Tilson uses in its web
development practice. Ben doesn’t understand what all the fuss is
about with PHP’s objects - they pretty much work just like in C++!
