PHP problem

Hi,
I'm having problems running my PHP. I am pretty new to PHP so please
forgive me.
First I created a small echo statement within my HTML, this loads
fine, showing all my HTML and PH. Then I tried to connect to my mysql
database and if it could not connect, then bring up an error message,
and if it connected to say connected. This was fine and connected. I
could even edit the database with a few queries. When I try to select
data from the database or even a simple echo statement below my
connection code the screen goes blank. Can you help????
