Start by reading the manual, which is available free-of-charge at
http://php.net/. Learn from the examples and the notes submitted by
your peers. Then go to http://php.net/mailinglists and
subscribe to
the PHP General mailing list. Dive right in and start to learn by
trying things, and when you get stumped, use Google and the manual to
find your answers. If you can't find them there, send an email to the
PHP General list.
Aside from that, we don't officially endorse any books or authors,
but checking Amazon or your local library should turn up a ton of
useful results for you.
Best of luck.
