Dojo recently updated their search to use Google. Looks pretty slick and seems to work alright:

Focusing on the documentation search sounds practical to me.
Last year I wrote a specialized version of manual-lookup.php that had better scoring logic and was
tweaked to run faster by creating a function cache. The intention at the time was to produce JSON
output so that we could have a search as you type feature.
I also wrote a version that used the PhD db, but it was slower and SQLite does not offer much to
assist with text matching. I'm not sure SQLite is a good solution. A manual-lookup.php style
search for the functions + a Google powered full-text search might work better and would avoid the
many-variations-of-sqlite problem.
