Web browsers have to "calculate" the image-output of the page. IE is specially bad at this as it will generate an in-memory BMP with the full data. That will mean that a page with some millions of characters will generate a memory footprint that surpasses all the memory of the computer and starts to goble disk memory... Cheers...
