Mail configuration

I'm confused about the getting the mail() function to work with Windows NT 4.0. I made a script that calls the mail() function, but when the user submits the form, the browser sits there and a message pops up. Warning: Failed to Receive in common.inc on line 109 Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in common.inc on line 111 I think it's something with the php.ini file from what I've read. We've got the right mailserver, is it necassary to set the from variable?
