Problem with extensions w2k/IIS PHP4.3.0

I seem to be unable to track down my problem. In my php.ini I have set
extension_dir = c:\php\extensions
I confirmed that the dll files are there and adequately permissioned
(everyone
has full control).
When I enable extension=php_mssql.dll my webserver hangs.
What am I missing.
