Have you set up your SMTP server in the PHP configuration?

I am trying to send an e-mail like this:
<?php
$to = "e-mail@address";
$subject = "xsubject";
$message = "x data";
mail ($to, $subject, $message);
?>
There are no errors, but the e-mail is never sent !
