Hi everyone
I have just had a brief discussion on the main PHP list and wanted to have a
chat with you about it. saw the following message, which was part of a
larger message:
"As for stability, no doubt you should not rely on PHP under Windows for a
production server, unless the load is low enough for CGIs to properly
handle it."
and I asked the following
">I've got to dive in here and ask why? :) We have been asked by a client
to
>develop their site and they have a completely NT system there. They don't
>have a preference and, although I know Cold Fusion, I want to develop in
PHP
>and use mySQL. Is PHP not "good enough" (gulp) for a production server
>under Windows or have I mis-read your comments (which could happen!)"
and Zeev and Rasmus made the following comments:
Zeev: "PHP under Windows is a relatively young creature. You have basically
two
options:
- Using PHP as a CGI. This is as reliable as PHP under UNIX, but results
in a fairly serious performance hit.
- Using PHP as a native module, most probably under IIS. This is a new
feature of PHP 4.0, and when it matures it'll be fast and reliable, but
currently, I don't consider it to be reliable enough. Your mileage may
vary though, it may work fine."
Rasmus: "The ISAPI version really has not received adequate testing to be
considered production quality. The CGI version works fine, but it is CGI
and as such is not going to be able to handle a huge amount of traffic."
The problem that I have is that I am just pitching for a fairly large
website and the client is insisting that we use NT as that is what they have
expertise in. I want to use PHP for it and was hoping that some people on
this list with the experience of running a production server, which has a
fair amount of traffic, might be able to give me a few pointers. I'd be
interested in some URLs too if that was ok so that I can see things running
Thanks in advance
Ade
