setting directory permission

I hav written a php application that will create a direcotory with then name given by user and upload file into it it work prefect on my pc server. but when i upload to the web server........there is error due to my directory permission is there any way to control a directory permission with php script?? my webserver is an NT webserver with php enable. thanx
