Do you have access to the mail server, and it's logs, if any? If so, you
might be able to check the configuration or the logs to see what's going on.
It may be that it's a broken smtp server - I don't know anything about
postfix myself. Do you have docs for it?
Or maybe you are able to test, and maybe use another smtp server?
