PHP4 & COM under Windows 98

Newbie here....
I am running PHP4 in a Windows 98SE environment. I am playing around with
PHP4 & COM trying to prototype a desktop portal that will launch Word,
Excel, and Access applications. I followed the examples I found posted on
the PHP Everywhere site to launch Word, and it worked great. But when I try
to launch Excel and Access I have less the spectacular results. Access
starts up and the closes down almost instantly. Excel causes an error in
Apache and terminates my browser session, leaving a hung process.
Does anyone have any suggestions or sample routines for launching Access,
Excel, or other Windows COM applications ?
