Search for PEAR auth() package at pear.php.net
Works fine and has some basic code samples.
The package is explained in more depth at various other pages which can be
obtained by some Googling. Search for "Pear auth".
Hope it works for you (not exactly pointing you to a tutorial, i'm sorry).
